Hey, it WORKS. Decently crafted of solid wood, and the slots are wide enough to accommodate my Henckels 4-star and Pro-S knives. This block holds everything I need it to.Methinks Spider Woman wasn't rating the quality *of the knife block*, but whether she likes knife blocks in the first place. Of course the slots go through - that's so any dust or dirt falls out the bottom instead of accumulating in the slot. It works for me, and I think this is the best knife block you'll find for the price.
Addendum: My knife block, which was purchased at [local store], is slightly different from this one. The overall style, size, and construction are similar, but the slots have been re-arranged slightly, with three small slots across the bottom and a 3-3/8" wide cleaver slot across the top - total 8 knives, sharpening steel, scissors, and cleaver. If you don't need a cleaver and want more wide knife slots, this block will work well. If you require a cleaver slot, you may want to look for the model I have.
